Groundwater Resource Sustainability

KOT Environmental Consulting, Inc. (KOTECI) assists clients to develop, manage and protect this valuable and irreplaceable water resource in a way that balances social and economic needs, and ensures the protection of ecosystems for future generations. Water’s many different uses—for agriculture, for healthy ecosystems, for people and livelihoods—demands coordinated action. KOTECI is a proponent of the old adage that, "you can't manage what you can't measure.” We aid groundwater resource planners by providing answers to the following three questions through source water assessment:

Where is the water?
How much is there?
How is sustainability ensured?

KOTECI provides answers to these questions for comprehensive planning, wellhead protection, recharge area protection, watershed management, and monitoring system design.

Comprehensive Planning
dictates public policy in terms of transportation, utilities, land use, recreation, housing and natural resources. KOTECI assists in developing goals, objectives, policies and programs for the conservation and effective management of the groundwater resource.

Wellhead Protection
The wellhead protection area is the surface and subsurface area surrounding a water well or wellfield, supplying a public water system, through which contaminants are reasonably likely to move toward and reach the water well or wellfield.  KOTECI has extensive experience developing wellhead protection plans that take into account the local hydrogeologic features of the area and the requirements of the State’s Program.

Recharge Area Protection
is important for the maintenance of the groundwater resource.  The characteristics of highly sensitive recharge areas that make them so valuable are the same characteristics that provide conduits for contamination.  Good land use planning is essential for the protection of recharge areas.  KOTECI has been instrumental in defining recharge areas for numerous clients.

Watershed Management
KOTECI’s efforts in watershed management are aimed at the sustainable distribution of its resources and the process of creating and implementing plans, programs, and projects to sustain and enhance watershed functions that affect the plant, animal and human communities within a watershed boundary.  Management of the water supply and the water quality is paramount.

Monitoring System Design
Monitoring groundwater and surface water levels is essential to effective water resource management.  KOTECI has extensive experience in designing and installing effective monitoring systems as well as the ability to analyze resulting.
